IRIS: Iris is a genus of between 200-300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. A must have perennial, the iris tolerates wet, boggy areas and is very adaptable to a variety of soil types.

This adaptable plant does well in wet soils, but also thrives in good garden soil with adequate moisture. Perfect for planting along pond edges, streambanks and other wet habitats, it will thrive in water up to a foot deep. The blue flowers make their appearance in June and July, atop two to three foot tall stems. When soils dry out in midsummer,Wild Iris doesn't miss a beat. Individual plants will grow to form attractive clumps, which can be easily divided in fall or early spring. Grows well in any moist soil, in full sun to light shade. Attracts Hummingbirds. Hardy in zones 3-9. Proper name: Iris virginica shrevei.

Review & Description

Obviously a native of Iran (formerly Persia), this beauty has been culitvated in Europe since the early 1800s, according to "The Genus Tulip" by expert Sir Alfred Daniel Hall. Like other species tulips, it is very small, with jewel-toned colors. Like the others, it is dependably perennial and very useful for early color in a rock garden, in the front of a border, meadow, or any spot where its brilliant beauty can be appreciated. The bulbs are small, so planting takes just minutes. And you'll enjoy these little beauties during early spring every year from the day you plant them.

There are about 150 species of tulips that occur in the wild from Central Asia all the way to Spain and Portugal. Most are native to rocky, arid regions east of Europe. It is hard to believe that these little flowers, more the size of crocus, are the original forms of the big flashy hybridized tulips we all know and love. But to any wildflower gardener who looks close, the brilliant colors and even the petal shapes and other characteristics are there. They are all really botanical heirlooms in the truest sense, and deserve a place in every garden.

The Dahlia family comprises a large variety of plants with varying colors and sizes. Dahlias include dwarfs that are only 18 inches tall, to seven foot tall varieties. The smallest flowers are just button sized, while the largest blooms are the size of dinner plates. Not surprisingly, these big varieties are called "Dinner Plate Dahlias". Flowers include single bloom and double bloom. Brilliant blooms include orange, salmon, bronze, apricot, yellow, crimson, scarlet and lavender.

Product Details

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #7258 in Lawn & Patio
  • Brand: Seed Needs

Features

  • Grow Dahlia in full sun to partial shade. They prefer a rich, well draining garden soil. Add plenty of compost and manure at planting time. Fertilizer should be applied regularly all season. But, use a low nitrogen fertilizer. Too much nitrogen can result in lots of foliage, with few flowers.
  • Keep the soil moist but drained, at all times. Plants are heat resistant, but need plenty of water. Water regularly during periods of drought.
  • Space smaller varieties 16" apart. The largest varieties should be spaced 2 feet apart, allowing ample room for growth.
  • Dahlias should be pinched back twice to promote bushier growth. Do so the first time after there is 3-4 sets of leaves on the stems.
  • Dahlia grows quickly, and will bloom in mid summer. Stem tips will develop multiple buds, usually three. To grow bigger blooms disbud the two side buds, leaving the middle, terminal bud.

New! A brand new and exciting combnation of two of our favourite Rembrandt Tulips, Blueberry Ripple and Raspberry Ripple. Blueberry Ripple has striking white flowers with contrasting violet-blue flames while Raspberry Ripple has rosy-red flames climbimg up the same white flowers. Both varieties are 'sisters', which is guarnatee that they flower at exactly the same time in mid-spring. Both are among the longest lasting varieties in the garden.

Triumph Tulips are the result of crossing between long stemmed Darwin Tulips and varieties of the short stemmed Early Tulips. When planted outdoors, their flowering time is in-between these varieties, blooming late April/early May. With their strong stems, large flowers, and medium heights, Triumph Tulips are excellent as pot plants for Valentine's Day and Easter. Also superb in beds or borders.

Splendid Cornelia 10 Hyacinth Bulbs - FRAGRANT
by Hirts: Bulbs

Buy new: $12.50 $9.99

(Visit the Most Wished For in Bulbs list for authoritative information on this product's current rank.)

Review & Description

Like "Delft Blue", "Splendid Cornelia" gives you the effect of a bi-color with its white-edged petals. The two pastels are great planted together.

Planting Hyacinths: Daffodils may be the symbol of spring. Tulips add dramatic color. But its the hyacinths that bring the perfume. One of the most powerfully fragranced blooms in the flower kingdom is the justly famous Dutch hyacinth--the result of hundreds of years of hybridizing a lovely little wildflower from Turkey--now an upright torch of incredible color and unmatched perfume.

Plant your hyacinth bulbs close together for a dramatic display, either in groups of one color or as a rainbow of several shades. Many gardeners think they look best in close groups of 3, 5 or more. Hyacinths must have good drainage, so be sure to plant them where they'll never be in standing water. With some shade, the flowers will last longer than in full sun. And next spring, don't forget to stop and smell the hyacinths!
